Keith Armato's report from Cosmoprof 2000 |
|
|
| April 17th - Bologna, Italy
Cosmoprof, held each Spring in Bologna, Italy, is the premiere beauty show in the world. In its 34 year run it has grown to over 1,600 exhibitors from 50 countries and is attended by over 130,000 people. This is a big show! As large as it is, however, some packaging trends do emerge.

Okay, so a trip to Italy wouldn't be complete without a little sightseeing.

One trend is a renewed emphasis on color in metal packaging. For the last few years, many designers wanted the clean look of base metals, but now there are signs of natural, soft, unique colors appearing in metal packaging. Many of these colors are printed with transparent inks to combine with the base metal while other colors are opaque with matte varnishes to give the package a beautifully subtle, soft appearance. |

In most cases, however, the color palettes are quite unique, taking colors from nature. With VinCenzo's many international ink resources, we have color systems not regularly used in the United States and can work with your designers to develop packaging with the latest color trends. Using these color systems, your packaging will have a unique appearance that is sure to make it stand out and capture the interest of consumers. |

Aluminum tins printed with transparent inks can achieve a softer look that is becoming quite popular in Europe.

Another trend is the use of aluminum as the base metal for packaging. Some designers find that the natural look of this metal will enhance their packaging. Although aluminum is regularly fabricated into tins, most notably in France and India, the original tooling was not developed for consumer products and is often outdated, resulting in poor closures and sharp edges. VinCenzo has worked to develop tooling especially for the fabrication of aluminum to make tins that have fully rolled edges, curls and beads to assure that the tin will perform to modern packaging standards. Aluminum is more costly than tinplate, but if your budget allows, you may want to consider this base metal for your next package.
Perhaps it cannot be classified as a trend, but there was a lot of talk about short hairstyles in the hairdressing exhibits. With the new law in Italy requiring all motor scooter operators and passengers to wear a helmet, short hair seems to be the only solution to the dreaded "helmet hair" that is now such a common sight. I must admit that VinCenzo does not have a solution for this problem. Some solutions are beyond even our inventiveness.
