Queen for a Day
Michalena Lloyd, an administrative assistant and recent addition to the VinCenzo crew, was recently honored as Chicago's Columbus Day Queen. We've always known that we're the most capable tin company, but now we've got hard evidence to substantiate our long-standing claim that we're also the best looking.
It's all about the tiara
A first-timer to the world of pageants, Michalena was one of 30 entrants in the 2000 Columbus Day Parade Queen Contest, sponsored by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans. "My mom really thought I should do it," she explains, "so I signed up."
Michalena and mom, Anne.
The competition was stiff from the get go. Not only was she up against the reigning Miss Teen U.S.A., but as her father joked (we think), "Don't get your hopes up, Michalena. This thing is probably fixed... after all, Italians are involved." However, after three cuts, two outfits, and a question about the (im)propriety of Britney Spears' attire, Miss Teen U.S.A. was packing up her pink dress, and VinCenzo's very own was wearing the tiara.
In pink, the reigning Miss Teen U.S.A... doesn't look so tough.
And if the prestige plus the sound spanking of a cultural icon weren't enough, she was also awarded dinner for two at the Palmer House, $1000 in cash, two round-trip tickets to Rome of Milan, and of course... her very own float in Chicago's Columbus Day Parade.
So what does the future hold? Plans for the trip to Italy are still on hold, but the whole family will be coming along. For now, she'll be maintaining the smooth operations of VinCenzo's home office in Chicago, and attending Columbia College in pursuit of a Marketing & Communications degree. As for her desire to try another pageant? "Nah, that's it. I pushed my luck with this one," she claims, adding with a laugh, "I dunno. Maybe I'll try for Miss Vienna Beef or something."
